First Tournament of the Season
Submitted By April Field on Tuesday, October 22, 2019
The Peewee A Soo Greyhounds travelled to Clarington for the Applefest Tournament held on Oct 18-20 for their first tournament of the year. Game one featured the Greyhounds playing the Peterborough Ice Kats and eventual tournament winners. Olivia Patrick got the start in goal and played spectacular. The Hounds struck first with Macey Karhi scoring the first goal, assisted by Alana Johnstone and Zara Zavoral. The Greyhounds second goal of the game was put in the back of the net by Makayla Robertson, assisted by Bryce Gagnon with a nice pass from the corner. The game was fast paced with lots of passing between players. Unfortunately, the outcome was not what the team was hoping for with the Kats taking it 5-2; however, the coaches were very pleased with the total team effort.

In game two, the Greyhounds faced the Whitby Wolves and eventual championship finalists. Pippa Holmes got the start in net and kept the game within reach as they dropped 2-0. The defense provided excellent coverage in front of Holmes, while the forwards provided tenacious fore-checking the entire game, but the team was unable to get on the score board. Again the coaches were very pleased with the total team effort both offensively but more importantly on defense, limiting Whitby’s chances.

In game three, the Hounds faced the Scarborough Sharks. Unfortunately, the outcome was not as anticipated as the Sharks took it to the Hounds 6-2. Olivia Patrick did a great job in net but the Hounds couldn’t overcome the fast start of the Sharks. The Greyhounds' first goal was scored by Skylar Ruschpler, assisted by Bryce Gagnon in the 1st period. The Hounds second goal was scored by Makalya Robertson, assisted by Riley Pietramale and Lily Rumiel in the 2nd period.

In game four (playoff game), the Greyhounds once again faced off against the Whitby Wolves. The girls came out hard and strong against the Wolves but fell short 4-1. Throughout the game, the defense played well and kept the pucks away from the net while the forwards played tough with lots of fore-checking and back-checking. Pippa Holmes had a strong showing in net, not allowing any goals in the 2nd or 3rd period. The Hounds offence pinned the Wolves in their own zone for long stretches but ran into a hot goalie. The lone goal was scored by Skylar Ruschpler, assisted by Bryce Gagnon. Overall the coaches were extremely pleased with the strong effort by the entire team this weekend.

The Greyhounds' next tournament is scheduled for Detroit on Nov 8-10th. Go Greyhounds!
